A Christmas Memory

Reading the season with Truman Capote

Although not a Christmas person,

I am a massive fan of this bittersweet gem of a Truman Capote short story.

It is crafted to perfection and the perfect degree of poignant.

Whenever I get a chance (usually about once a year), I like to introduce my students to it. Depending on their age/level, we focus on simple things like sentence variety and description, or go deeper into areas like connotation and rhetorical devices.

This video does a bit of both, giving you a chance to appreciate the layers of genius involved in baking this particular cake.

FYI: I’ll be doing a full audio recording of the story at some point before Christmas as a subscriber treat. Stay tuned.
